Chicago History Museum

by Jeff Wysaski

The story of Chicago is one that is rich in history and importance. For those interested in the past, present and future of America's Second City, the Chicago History Museum is a must-see destination.

Chicago History MuseumOriginally founded in 1856 as the Chicago Historical Society, Chicago's modern History Museum is located at the corner of Clark Street and North Avenue, across the street from Lincoln Park.
Chicago Jazz and Blues Club at the History MuseumThe premier permanent exhibit, Chicago: Crossroads of America, explores Chicago's unique history through a variety of culturally significant artifacts, paintings, model skyscrapers and informational tours. Favorites of the Crossroads exhibit include the ability to board the first passenger car to transport Chicagoans on the L train (circa 1893) and the chance to visit a replica Chicago Jazz and Blues Club.
The Sensing Chicago exhibit is another favorite (especially among kids), and allows patrons to ride a high-wheel bicycle, go back in time to the Great Chicago Fire and dive for pop flies at Comiskey Park.
Chicago Fire DioramaOther permanent exhibits include a Diorama Hall and a Treasures Collection, which includes such invaluable installments as souvenirs from Chicago's past world fairs and Abraham Lincoln's deathbed.
The Chicago History Museum also offers additional exhibits on a rotating basis. Exhibits vary considerably, but tend to highlight important figures throughout Chicago's history, such as Abraham Lincoln.
Chicago Transit in Crossroads exhibitFor added enrichment, the History Museum showcases special events, lectures and seminars. Museum-sponsored tours of Chicago are also provided, and allow visitors to encounter the city's past firsthand. Pure entertainment events, such as Chicago-themed movie screenings on the lawn of the museum, provide yet another opportunity to enjoy the museum's outreach activities.
