The Marina was built on lagoon and marshland that had been filled for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition and includes The Palace of Fine Arts and a large grass field perfect for jogging, kite flying or sunbathing known as Marina Green. |

The Palace of Fine Arts, designed by Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck for the Exhibition celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal, is now the home of the Exploratorium. A temporary structurebuilt to last just one yearthe Palace of Fine arts has been renovated a number of times mostly with funds donated by San Francisco residents. It is due for another major renovation in 2006.
