Union Square gets its name from a series of violent pro-Union demonstrations here near the beginning of the Civil War.

On May 14, 1903 President Roosevelt dedicated the Dewey Monument in Union Square as a tribute to the sailors of the US Navy commemorating the victory of Admiral George Dewey and the American fleet over Spanish forces at Manila Bay, the Philippines, on May 1, 1898, during the Spanish-American War.

The 97-foot Corinthian column with a figure representing Victory at the top survived the 1906 earthquake. The model who posed for the sculpture later married sugar heir Adolph Spreckels to become Alma deBretteville Spreckels. Together they built the Spreckels Mansion in Pacific Heights and donated the Palace of the Legion of Honor art museum to the City of San Francisco.

Maiden Lane, famous for upscale shops and art galleries, connects with Union square at Stockton Street between Post and Geary streets.

Union Square in San Francisco is famous for its many upscale and speciality stores and shops. Many of San Francisco's best hotels and restaurants are also found within a few blocks of Union Square.

Westin St. Francis Hotel picture The Westin St. Francis has been a San Francisco landmark since 1904. You can see the St. Francis behind the Dewey Monument in the picture to the left and in the 360° panoramas at the top of the column. The Grand Hyatt hotel is also on Union Square and can be seen in both panoramas.

Nearby Market Street has many great shopping opportunities including the San Francisco Shopping Center across from the Powell Street Cable Car turnaround.

Hallidie Plaza, bordering Market Street at the end of the Powell Street Cable Car line, provides a quiet spot in the busy city for a game of Chess.

Crocker Galleria has both a rooftop park and a rooftop terrace where you can relax and enjoy a birds eye view of the activity on Market and New Montgomery Streets. Crocker Galleria is worth visiting if just to see the block wide arched skylight — from below or above.

Transportation options to and from the Union Square area include the Powell Street Cable Car line, Street Car (F-line) and BART stations on Market Street at both Montgomery and Powell Streets.
