Ruby Hill Winery tasting roomAt the corner of Vineyard and Isabel Avenues sits an imposing Mediterranean building with an arching gate and sign that says Ruby Hill Winery.
The name is historic—from a winery that began in 1887. But the building is new, a creation of Michael Callahan, who owns the surrounding land and vineyards.
The tasting room/ gift store and tiny deli on the southeast side of the building is colorful, with a fireplace, couches, and a patio with a fountain. Casa Real Event Center on the northwest side of the building hosts weddings and other festivities.
Ruby Hill Winery in Livermore ValleyMichael’s mission at Ruby Hill is to “set Livermore Valley on the map with incredible wines,” and a level of production that allows him to hire excellent talent like Ruby Hill winemaker Chris Graves.
Graves earned his degree in enology and viticulture at UC Davis and interned at Wente Brothers where he became the winemaker for Wente’s Tamás Estate Winery until Michael hired him.
Ruby Hill produces approximately 75 percent estate-bottled wines. The rest are from locally grown grapes, as well as California-coastal-sourced grapes. They focus on Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Their blends are Super Tuscan and a Bordeaux style.
