California, Carneros AVA Winery in Napa Valley
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
Situated in the heart of the bucolic Carneros district, Adastra Winery is surrounded by gently rolling hills and beautiful vineyards.
Adastra—which means “through striving to the stars” in Latin—was founded in 1989 by Chris and Naomi Thorpe. They planted their 33-acre former ranch with four acres each of Chardonnay and Merlot, selling it to local wineries.
The grapes earned such stellar reviews that they increased both varietals to seven acres each and added six acres of Pinot Noir. All vineyards are farmed organically.
Tastings—given by Chris Thorpe or his son-in-law, Edwin Richards—take place in an historic, rustic-looking 1800s redwood barn with lots of authentic charm (the Adastra barn is included in the annual Carneros Barn Tour). The winery is situated amidst the beautiful, serene landscape typical of the away-from-it-all Carneros region.
A 16-foot-tall mammoth, the mascot of Adastra’s sister label, Ed’s Red, greets visitors who wander inside the ancient barn.
