Carneros AVA Winery in Napa Valley, California
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
Once seen, Domaine Carneros is not soon forgotten. Poised dramatically atop a hill, where it draws the attention of travelers on the road below, the huge and majestic structure was inspired by the historic Chateau de la Marquetterie in Champagne, France.
Not coincidentally, that chateau is the country estate of the Taittinger family, renowned throughout the world for producing high-end French champagne. They, together with French American Vintners, founded Domaine Carneros, which specializes in sparkling wine and Pinot Noir.
Be prepared to taste in an elegant manner. In the tasting salon you can belly up to a bar if you like, but most people prefer being seated at a table of their own.
When the weather is sunny, as it often is in Carneros, enjoy the terrace and its endless views of vineyard-covered hills. In either location you can order up caviar or a cheese tray with selections chosen to pair with your bubbly (or Pinot Noir) tasting.
The Taittinger family has been involved with champagne dating back to the 1700s, but they keep up with the times: Domaine Carneros possesses one of the largest photovoltaic systems of any winery in the world; it is also a certified organic winery.
Domaine Carneros periodically creates wines to honor exceptional women. The 2002 “Frivolités” Brut Rosé celebrated the 90th birthday of Julia Child, and in 2005 “La Divina”—The Divine One—honored the 100th birth year of Greta Garbo.
