Carneros AVA Winery in Napa Valley, California
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
In 1982, consulting winemaker Tony Soter founded Etude with the aim of creating high-quality wines. Foremost among his beliefs was that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the grapes are harvested, and he acted on those beliefs at Etude.
While most Carneros appellation soil is clay, the soils of Etude have a volcanic origin (common in wineries along the Silverado Trail). Extensive soil analysis led to planting clones in small blocks—sometimes very small blocks—based on soil types. Today Etude is owned by an Australian company, Foster’s Group, whose Napa portfolio also includes Beringer, St. Clement, and Stags’ Leap.
The modern, wood-floored, and high-ceilinged tasting room is bright and beautiful, with a backlit bar display that transforms wine bottles into works of art. On a sunny day you might prefer to sit outside on the patio surrounded by flowers and greenery.
And if you ever wondered what became of RMS Distillery, now you know.
In French the word “etude” means “study.” The implication is that Etude is dedicated to studying and mastering the winemaker's craft.
