Carneros AVA Family Winery in Napa Valley, California
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
Bob Mueller and Karen McKenzie, the husband-wife team who founded McKenzie-Mueller in 1989, have been surrounded by vineyards all their lives: they both grew up in Napa Valley.
Early in his career, Bob worked for legendary winemaker Robert Mondavi, from whom he learned the ins and outs of crafting refined wines. He’s been perfecting his knowledge ever since with a long and illustrious line of award-winners.
The winery is by any definition a family affair: Bob is both winegrower and winemaker; Karen manages the office and serves as tasting guide; and all five children have worked at the winery.
The Carneros property was serving as grazing land for cattle when McKenzie-Mueller took it over years ago, and the family planted and developed the extensive vineyards literally from the ground up.
A visit here is a chance to see old-fashioned winemaking at work. All parts of the process are done by hand, with no machine intervention. Natural yeast fermentation is used, and wines are bottled unfiltered.
Your tasting will occur in a cozy renovated barn filled with art and photographs, and your wine will probably be poured by one of the people whose name is on the label. A visit to the barrel room and/or an information filled walk through the vineyard can be included depending on your interest and time availability.
In 2000 the winery was selected as Estate Winery of the Year by Wine & Spirits Magazine—a notable honor.
