Jo Ann Truchard in the Truchard Vineyards tasting room/barrel roomTony Truchard first learned about working the vineyards from his grandfather, a transplanted Frenchman who owned a Texas farm.
Truchard grew up to be a doctor, but growing grapes stayed in his heart. In 1974, though he lived and worked in Reno, Nevada, he and his wife, Jo Ann, bought a 20-acre prune orchard in Napa’s Carneros region. Working mostly on weekends, they planted vines and began selling grapes to local wineries. In 1989 they produced the first wine under their own label. Today, Truchard Estate Vineyard has grown to 400 acres.
The Truchards sell about 80% of their grapes to other Napa Valley wineries, reserving the remaining grapes for their own hand-crafted wines.
Truchard Vineyards barn and cave entranceA visit here is low-key and intimate. The property’s old barn was long ago converted into a winery, and the Truchards also dug a 10,500 square-foot wine cave. You’ll sample at least four wines and, depending on the weather, will take a tour through the caves and vineyards.
You might want to pick up a bottle of the Truchard’s extra-virgin olive oil. The olives are estate grown, pressed locally, and bottled at the winery.

The acreage of Truchard Vineyards is composed of many diverse microclimates, allowing 10 different varietals to grow under optimum conditions—making it one of the most diverse estate vineyards in California.
