Taste at Oxbow
Two Winery Tasting Room at Oxbow Market in Napa CA
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
In 2008, the founders of Napa’s Mahoney Vineyards and Waterstone Winery combined forces to open Taste at Oxbow, a shared tasting room in downtown Napa.
Francis and Kathy Mahoney began growing Pinot Noir in Carneros in 1971, making them among that varietal’s early Napa pioneers. Mahoney also produces little-known varietals such as Montepulciano and Albariño; under a second label, Fleur of California, they produce value wines.
Waterstone Winery was started by wine executive Brent Shortridge and winemaker Philip Zorn in 2000, with the aim of providing top-tier wines that are not only varietally distinct and balanced, but affordable.
The beautiful and modern tasting room has a bright, airy and spacious quality. An emphasis was placed on “buliding it Green,” and much of what you’ll see is made from recycled materials (take a close look at the bar, which resembles marble: it’s actually made from a composite of recycled wine and olive oil bottles). Artwork lines the walls, much of it for sale.
Since 1974 Francis Mahoney has been conducting extensive Pinot Noir clonal trials. Planting a variety of clones on the same rootstock, he has evaluated clone characteristics in various ways and helped advance the quality of Pinot Noir wines.
