Honig Vineyard & Winery
Away-from-it-all Wine Tasting in Rutherford, Napa Valley CA
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
Back in 1964, San Francisco advertising executive Louis Honig bought 68 acres of Rutherford ranchland. He planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, sold them to nearby winemakers, and dreamed of retiring to make wine of his own. When he died before realizing that dream, his family made wine in his honor from the vineyard’s Sauvignon Blanc grapes—and won a Gold Medal at a California state fair. Thus was a winery born.
Today the family-owned enterprise is headed by grandson Michael Honig.
The winery is a little hard to find, which gives it an “away from it all” flair. The attractive wooden building is surrounded by trees and fronted by a large sunny patio. The interior is stylish but not flashy; the casual, laid-back feel is enhanced by the appointment-only tastings, which prevent crowds.
Tastings are held both indoors and, when the weather warrants, on the patio. Tables and comfortable chairs are available for the hosted, sit-down tastings, which are notable for the staff’s friendly but informative style.
Honig is involved in an innovative program that trains golden retrievers to become “sniffer dogs,” capable of detecting vine mealy bugs in the vineyard long before they can be detected by humans.
