Peju Province Winery
Art Filled, Distinctive Architecture, Napa Valley Winery
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
It took Tony and Herta Peju two years of searching to find the perfect property in Napa Valley. Finally, one day in 1982, they discovered the ideal spot: 30 acres in Rutherford planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and French Colombard, and graced with an early 1900s house.
After studying enology at UC Davis, Tony began making wines of his own to critical praise.
Peju has a distinctive look, thanks to its unusual architecture, huge square, tapered tower, steep copper roof, and oddly-pruned sycamore trees lining the driveway.
No appointment is necessary, but you may have to wait a short time for space at one of the tasting bars (hint: browse the enticing gift shop). The main tasting room has beautiful cherry wood furnishings, a huge copper chandelier, and an impressive antique stained glass window dating to 1906. Turkish tiles make up much of the floor, with tasting counters composed of Brazilian Quartzite marble.
The rooms are filled with works by Bay Area artists and reproductions of ancient Greek vessels are set into wall niches. The tasting room hosts are quite entertaining (the most well-known is famed for his yodeling).
In summer the gardens are a blaze of color, filled with roses, giant dahlias, and Canterbury bells.
