A Napa Valley Winery on the Silverado Trail
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
Quintessa was founded by Chilean vintners Agustin and Valeria Huneeus. When they discovered their 280-acre Napa property in 1989, it was one of the last untouched parcels on the Valley floor, and it had never been planted to grapes.
Agustin’s first job in the wine industry was as CEO of Chile’s Concha y Toro, and under his leadership it went from being a small company to the nation’s largest winery. Valeria, who holds a Ph. D. and is an experienced microbiologist and viticulturist, is the vineyard master. She has been the force behind Quintessa’s biodynamic farming.
The vineyard’s many microclimates, soil types, elevations, and exposures have been planted to a wide selection of rootstocks and clones, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (with smaller plots of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère).
A tour and tasting here is unique. Bring comfortable walking shoes, because your small group (never more than 8) will be taken out onto the hills behind the winery to explore vineyards and take in fabulous views of the Estate’s large pond and oak woodlands, the valley stretching below, and the distant mountains.
Then it’s into the wine caves, a meander through the winery facility — where you may glimpse some concrete eggs, and off to a relaxed, luxurious tasting complete with delicious paired nibbles prepared by a chef.
The winery itself is architecturally stunning, a curved natural-stone building that hugs the land. Intended to be as non-disruptive to the terrain as possible, it’s a study in elegant minimalism both inside and out.
Agustin Huneeus’s other winery projects include Faust Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Illumination Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Chile’s Veramonte winery, and Washington’s Longshadows Vintners.
