The Terraces at Quarry Vineyards
Napa Valley hillside winery off the Silverado Trail
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
Located on the site of a 19th century quarry that provided stone for many of nearby St. Helena’s notable buildings, The Terraces is a small family-owned winery with approximately 30 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Zinfandel.
Most of the grapes grown here are sold to top-flight Napa wineries, but the owners make around 1000 cases each year from what they consider to be the finest grapes they produce.
If you love history, ancient stone buildings, and elegant simplicity, a visit here will be one of the highlights of your Napa sojourn. The Terraces is open only by appointment, and, provided with an entry code that lets you pass through the locked gate on the Silverado Trail, you’ll feel a bit as if you own the place.
At the winery you’ll be met by one of the owners or an employee, who will usher you into a 4WD vehicle for a tour into the vineyards and around the 120-acre property (you will marvel over the views from higher elevations).
You will also see the beautiful 19th century stone building that was the original winery and is still used for occasional parties or tastings and another ancient stone building where Quarry Vineyards produces a limited amount of traditional balsamic vinegar.
Expect a highly-individualized tour, something you rarely find in wine country these days. Back at the tasting room you’ll get to sample the excellent wines made at The Terraces at Quarry Vineyards either in the open modern tasting room above the winery, which has the feel of a contemporary home or, weather permitting, on the large back deck.
The property on which The Terraces is located was first settled as a homestead in the 1870s, with the earliest vines planted in 1881. The Zinfandel clone grown here today traces its roots to that date.
Amenities: Tours. A 2-bedroom guesthouse in the vineyards can be rented by customers and distributors.
