Prager Winery & Port Works
Small Winery in St. Helena with a Focus on Port
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
Born and raised in California’s Orange County, Jim Prager set out to be a veterinarian, but ended up in the insurance industry.
In 1974 he began making his own wine, joined local wine societies, and took his first trip to Napa Valley.
He and his wife, Imogene, fell in love with the area and began dreaming about starting a winery. Dreams became reality when, in 1979, they founded Prager Winery and carried out their first crush. Today the second generation of Pragers handles the winery’s day-to-day operations.
If you visit Prager, be prepared for one of Napa Valley’s unique experiences.
The tiny tasting room is nestled into an old barn and surrounded by a small, pretty garden. After you walk through a barrel storage area you’ll reach a room where every square inch of wall and most of the ceiling is festooned with paper money from around the world.
The room’s one small window is plastered with cobwebs that have built up, unmolested, since 1978 (Prager-ites call it “the web site”). You’ll often find family members behind the counter pouring the wine.
Prager does produce still wines, but the focus here is on Port and late harvest “dessert” wines.
