Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
Roy Raymond, Sr., came to Napa Valley in 1933, right after the appeal of prohibition.
He landed a “cellar rat” job at Beringer Winery, one of the few wineries that had remained open during prohibition (the winery had been legally allowed to produce medicinal and sacramental wines). After marrying founder Jacob Beringer’s granddaughter, Martha Jane Beringer, in 1936, Raymond continued working at the winery, eventually learning all facets of its operations.
After retiring in 1970, he and his sons Roy, Jr., and Walter, founded their own family winery. Since 2009 Raymond Vineyards has been owned by Boisset Family Estates.
Located away from traffic on Zinfandel Lane, the winery surroundings have a bucolic feel. The bright and modern main tasting room offers plenty of options for sampling Raymond wines, but you might want to opt for a more upscale tasting in the Crystal Cellar.
Lovers of modern art will enjoy the sculpture and other artwork on the grounds, and it’s fun to have your photo taken from within large and artfully-crafted picture frames. You might also enjoy taking a self-guided walking tour through the “Theater of Nature,” which explains the winery’s organic and biodynamic farming practices through interactive displays.
A visit to Raymond Vineyards is included on certain tours of the Napa Valley Wine Train.
