Victorian Architecture around the U.S. — Photo Collection
Victorian style homes and mansions have been a favorite photographic subject as I’ve traveled around the United States.
Based in the Bay Area for many years there were many opportunities to shoot the ‘Painted Ladies’ that the city is know for. The shear volume of Victorian homes is one thing that makes San Francisco unique. Many streets in almost every neighborhood are lined with carefully restored houses.
I’ve included examples of Victorian Architecture from the six states and eleven U.S. cities in the photo essay below; Carson City and Virginia City NV, Eureka, Ferndale, San Diego, Napa Valley and San Francisco CA, Lincoln NB, Rawlins WY, Port Townsend WA and New Orleans LA.
More Victorian homes and mansions are featured on iNeTours.com at: Historic Victorian Homes in San Francisco—with style descriptions, and Alamo Square — Postcard Row and other Victorian style homes, San Diego’s Heritage Park, New Orleans Garden District, and Napa’s Historic Homes, Victorian Inns and Bed & Breakfasts.
Victorian Architecture in the United States
The first two entries in this collection were shot in Port Townsend.
The first Victorian probably started life as a single family home, the second appears to be apartments over commercial space.
California — north to south
The Carson Mansion is the most famous Victorian in Eureka, but there are also many other fine examples.
A few miles south the Victorian Village of Ferndale has had several of its buildings recreated at Legoland California and is a popular location for films including The Majestic and two Star Trek movies.
There are many historic Victorian homes and mansions — some in use as wineries — in California’s Napa Valley.
I’ve added just three photos of San Francisco Victorian architecture since I have multiple examples in the two articles listed above. Two are in the Haight neighborhood, one showing details, and the last one is of a row of what would have been considered ‘tract houses’ when built showing how a little paint can add distinction.
These next two examples are in San Diego's Heritage Park and Little Italy neighborhood.
Carson City and Virginia City have a few well preserved Victorian style homes.
Wyoming & Nebraska
Crossing the U.S. I’ve seen beautiful Victorians in Rawlins WY and Lincoln NB.
The following two images are exterior and interior photos of Nottoway Plantation
