San Francisco Bay Sail Boat Cruise

Sail around Alcatraz
& under the Golden Gate Bridge
on the Adventure Cat Catamaran

A sail boat cruise around Alcatraz Island and under the Golden Gate Bridge is at the top of my list of favorite things to do while visiting San Francisco. I highly recommend this cruise.

One and a half hour cruises leave San Francisco's Pier 39 twice a day in the early afternoon and again later for a sunset cruise. View pictures from the sunset cruise here.

After boarding the Adventure Cat at Pier 39 and meeting owner / builder and Captain Hans and his crew your adventure will begin as you pass by the famous sea lions that hang out at Pier 39.
spacer
The sail is hosted on the 30 foot wide catamaran and Hans points her toward Alcatraz Island. You can sit in the large protected cabin with 360° views or "surf the outer net" on either of the two huge trampolines.
spacer
Taking a turn steering the Adventure Cat is a treat available to everyone. Drinks and snacks can be purchased in the cabin.
spacer
The Adventure Cat is Coast Guard certified for 48 passengers, but there were quite a few less than that on the late season mid-week day when I took these pictures. Passengers that day ranged in age from about 4 to over 70 and everyone had a relaxing and fun time.
spacer
Hans provides warm coats for those who didn't dress warm enough, but they weren't needed on this trip. I didn't even wear the light jacket I brought with me.
spacer
Leaving Alcatraz Island Prison behind we saw Angel Island, Tiburon and Sausalito pass on the right before reaching the incredible Golden Gate Bridge. Sailing through the Golden Gate under that famous bridge is something you really need to do at least once in your life.
spacer
You'll have an opportunity to look for seals and sea lions as the Adventure Cat makes a turn at Kirby Cove to head back to Pier 39. Passing back under the Golden Gate Bridge we came close enough to the enormous base of the north tower to almost feel like we could reach out and touch it.
spacer
Sailing along the waterfront you get a view of San Francisco that you won't see anywhere else. The fishing pier at Aquatic Park, Hyde Street Pier with its National Maritime Museum, Fisherman's Wharf and unique views of the Transamerica Pyramid and Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill can all be enjoyed as you relax in the sun.
spacer
In addition to the afternoon San Francisco Bay Cruise there is a sunset cruise and wine tour and sunset cruise option. More details on the sunset cruise and wine tour/sunset cruise combination can be found here.
spacer
I highly recommend this tour—it's a real bargain and a lot of fun!
